Mainz can conveniently be reached by air via the Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport (FRA), which is directly connected to destinations all over the world. Local trains take 25 minutes to Mainz - for travel details see our airport transportation page.
There is another airport “Frankfurt-Hahn” (HHN) situated 70 km west of Mainz, which is served by a few low-cost airlines. From certain European destinations this might be a budget alternative. There is a direct bus connection to Mainz central train station.

You will receive your personalized name badge upon registration. Participants are kindly requested to wear their name badges throughout the conference, in particular for the coffee and lunch breaks and the conference excursion. In case you have lost your badge, please report at the conference office.

ATMs (cash dispensers) are available at most of the banks in downtown Mainz; often they are accessible 24 h/day.

Certificate of Attendance
The certificate of attendance will be issued at the conference office.

Mainz is a city with a “mild continental climate”. The average daytime high and low temperatures in August are 24°C (78°F) and 12°C (56°F), respectively. Umbrellas may be useful, although this month usually shows more of the sunny side.

A cloakroom is located next to the registration area. Coats and luggage can be deposited during the opening hours of the conference office for a nominal fee.

Coffee and Lunch Breaks
Coffee, tea, refreshments and light lunches will be served in the North Foyer close to the exhibition and poster area and are included in the registration fee.

Conference Language
The conference language is English. No translation is provided.

The currency in Germany is Euro (€). Foreign currencies can be exchanged in banks, at the central train station, and at the airport.

Doctor / First Aid

Electricity used in Germany is 220 volts ac current at 50 Hz. The plugs are of CEE 7/4 or 7/16 type and require adaptors for most appliances from, e.g., USA, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, and UK.

Throughout Germany the emergency phone numbers are 110 (police) and 112 (fire brigade); the latter can be used for any kind of emergencies. Medical rescue is alerted by dialing 19222.
In case of an emergency within the conference venue, please contact the conference office.

Excursion and Conference Dinner
The Conference excursion (boat trip on the river Rhine) is on Wednesday afternoon and includes the Conference Dinner in the evening. Boarding starts at 13:00 hrs (1 pm) at the river bank in front of the conference venue. Upon registration you will get further detailed information.

All information regarding exhibition are to be found in the section Sponsors & Exhibitors. The exhibition stands are located on the Exhibition foyer. They are attended throughout the conference scientific program times.


The get-together is organized on Sunday evening, 18 – 21 h, in the foyer of the Convention Center Rheingoldhalle.

Guided tours
All optional touristic tours described in Optional Events start at the Rheingoldhalle. Please make sure to arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start in the area close to the conference office.

Insurance and Liability
The Organizers do not accept liability for personal injury or loss or damage of private property of participants and accompanying persons either during or while travelling to the conference. Participants are strongly recommended to seek insurance coverage for health and accident, lost luggage and trip cancellation.

There will be free internet available at the conference venue during the conference.

Meeting / Discussion Space
On the ground level (street or river level) you will find 3 rooms (Watford, Zagreb and Dijon), which are most of the time open for use by the participants. There, you can freely arrange mini-meetings, discussion groups or just work by yourself.

A message board will be located in the registration area. You can post your messages there.

Mobile Phones
Participants are kindly requested to keep their mobile phones off in the meeting rooms during sessions.

Oral Presentation
Speakers are reminded that oral presentation is all-electronic by LCD projectors, only. You can bring your own computer (Mac users must supply their own VGA adaptor) or a USB memory stick. It is required that speakers report in the respective lecture hall before the session starts.


There are several public parking garages around the conference venue. Parking fees are not included in the registration fee (daily rates: Rathaus Parkhaus 16 € and Parkhaus Rheinufer 8 €).

Plenary Talks
There will be no discussions after plenary talks (including the Glen Brown prize talks); in case of questions, please approach the speakers during the breaks.

Poster Presentation 
The poster areas are located in the foyers of the Rheingoldhalle. The poster boards are 120 cm wide. Please mount your poster to the assigned poster board (marked by your number) in the morning of the day of the appropriate poster session. Fixing materials will be provided. Please make sure you remove your poster after the session. 

Program Changes 
The organizers cannot assume liability for any changes in the program due to external or unforeseen circumstances. The most recent version of the program can be found on the conference web pages. Changes are posted on the message board close to the registration area.

Public Transportation in Mainz
Buses, trams and trains are combined in Mainz (and Wiesbaden) to form a traffic alliance and a single ticket is good for all transportation means. A Mainz city map that contains the transportation line grid is to be found in the conference bag. The bus stop for the conference venue is Rheingoldhalle/Rathaus.


Registration will start on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at 14:00 h (2 pm).


Mainz offers an attractive city center with numerous shopping possibilities within walking distance from the conference venue (across the pedestrian bridge). Almost all bigger stores are open from 10.00 to 20.00, Monday through Saturday. All major credit cards are accepted.

Smoking Policy
Smoking is prohibited inside the convention center. You are kindly requested to smoke outside the building where ashtrays are available for your convenience.


Generally, taxis are available in front of the convention center. In case you need support, the ILCC 2012 team at the conference office will be glad to assist you. Taxi phone is 06131 910 910 and the fares (within Mainz) are ca. 7 € and 11 € for a 2 and 5 km distance, respectively. For transportation out of Mainz, please negotiate the fare before starting.

Time Zone
Germany is in the Central European Time (CET) zone. As in most of the European countries there is daylight savings time during summer and the clock is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2).

Service is almost always included in hotel and restaurant bills. A further tip of a few coins is appropriate. Typically, the tipping in restaurants would be around 5-10%, tourist guide 10%.
